Playground Design in Oxford featuring Magical Mosaic Pathways and a Hexagonal wooden open sided shelter containing a sandpit

The newly transformed playground in Oxford, designed by Robert Sergent- Fairley of School Playground Designers, showcases how imaginative design can completely reinvent an uninspiring space.

Quote from the Head Teacher

“The transformation of our playground has been remarkable. What was once an uninspiring space is now a vibrant, engaging environment that supports both play and learning.

The design has captured our vision perfectly, and by phasing the project, we’ve been able to invest in something truly special without placing undue pressure on our budget. It’s already making a meaningful difference to our pupils’ daily experience.”

Previously a bland, featureless wetpour area, the site has been brought to life through the introduction of Robert’s signature Magical Mosaic Pathways. These vibrant, winding routes are carefully crafted to spark curiosity and exploration, encouraging children—and even adults—to engage more deeply with their surroundings.

The pathways not only add visual appeal but also create a sense of journey and storytelling within the playground.

In Brief

  • Complete transformation of a bland, featureless wetpour area
  • Designed by Robert Sergent- Fairley of School Playground Designers
  • Features Magical Mosaic pathways to inspire curiosity and exploration
  • Includes an open-sided learning pavilion for outdoor education
  • Covered sand pit allows for all-weather play
  • Incorporates one of Robert’s trademark water features
  • Phased approach to spread costs across financial periods
  • Second phase of development due to commence shortly

A standout feature of the design is the open-sided learning pavilion, which provides a flexible outdoor space for both play and education.

Beneath its shelter sits a covered sand pit, allowing children to enjoy tactile, creative play regardless of the weather. This thoughtful combination of function and creativity reflects a broader philosophy of blending learning with play in a natural, engaging environment.

Another distinctive element is one of Robert’s trademark water features, which introduces movement, sound, and sensory interaction to the space. This feature enhances the overall experience, offering children a dynamic way to explore cause and effect while interacting with natural elements.

Quotes From Parents

“Before the redesign, it was just an empty space the children didn’t really connect with. Now, with the mosaic pathways, my kids come home talking about the different ‘routes’ they discovered—it’s like a little adventure every day.” “

The covered sand area is such a thoughtful addition. Living in the UK, you never know what the weather will do, but now the children can still play and learn outside without it being cut short.”

“The whole playground feels more imaginative and welcoming. The water feature is a real highlight—my daughter is fascinated by it, and I love that she’s learning through play without even realising it.”

Importantly, the Oxford playground also demonstrates a practical approach to budgeting.

With a project value of £75,000, Robert worked closely with the client to phase the development, spreading costs across financial periods. This strategy allows schools to achieve high-quality, impactful designs without compromising due to immediate budget constraints.

As work on the second phase begins, the project stands as a strong example of how careful planning, creativity, and phased investment can deliver a truly inspiring outdoor environment.
