Key Stage 1 Nursery Playground
A Sustainable Natural Wood Playground in Addison, West London
In West London, the recently completed Addison playground design by Robert Sergent- Fairley of Scholl Playground Designers has delivered a Gold Award-winning Outdoor Learning and Nature Garden that has fundamentally reshaped how pupils experience their school environment.
Set in West London, the project transforms a previously underused outdoor area into a vibrant, immersive learning landscape.
In Brief
- Meandering natural pathways through the space
- Sensory planting (sight, smell, touch)
- Outdoor classroom areas with all-weather seating
- Shaded canopy zones for shelter and calm
- Quiet reflection spaces plus active play areas
From the outset, the school’s vision was to create a natural sanctuary where children could move beyond traditional classroom boundaries and engage directly with nature. The headteacher described it as an extension of the classroom, emphasising how the space has increased pupil engagement, imagination, and emotional ease.
Rather than functioning as a standard playground, the design now operates as a fully integrated Outdoor Learning Area, supporting teaching and exploration throughout the year.

“From the very beginning, our vision was to create a space where children could truly connect with nature while continuing to learn, explore, and grow.”
Fairley’s design carefully balances structure with freedom. Meandering natural pathways guide children through varied zones, encouraging discovery while maintaining gentle organisation of space.
Lush sensory planting stimulates sight, smell, and touch, while shaded areas beneath tree canopies provide calm, restorative environments. Outdoor classroom zones feature durable, all-weather seating, enabling group learning in any season.

More about this Design
Natural materials are used throughout to reinforce sustainability and create a cohesive, organic feel. Alongside active social and play spaces, quieter reflection areas ensure that children can choose different modes of interaction depending on their needs.
The result is a carefully layered environment that supports both imaginative play and focused learning.

“Seeing the transformation has been incredible. My child comes home excited every day, talking about the plants, the spaces they’ve explored, and what they’ve learned outside.
It ’s made learning feel so much more alive and meaningful, and I can really see their confidence growing.”
Overall, the completed garden represents a thoughtful fusion of landscape design and education, delivering a setting where children can learn, explore, and flourish in direct connection with nature.
