Grazebrook School: Transforming Play with Nature and Imagination
Grazebrook School’s outdoor play area has undergone a remarkable transformation, turning what was once a poorly constructed space into a vibrant, imaginative haven for children.
The new playground has been thoughtfully designed to combine adventure, learning, and natural beauty, offering an outdoor environment that can be enjoyed throughout the year.
Quote from Bavaani Nanthabalan; Executive Head Teacher
“It has been a pleasure to have your boys working here at the school. They have worked so hard and so discreetly behind their fenced off area.
The children were fascinated to watch their daily progress. We have all been amazed at their precision and craftsmanship in every aspect of their on site construction of this project.
This finished Play Garden is absolutely wonderful and must be quite unique for a Primary school.Once again our deepest thanks to you and your amazing team.”
The centerpiece of the new design is an exciting timber activity structure, skillfully crafted and hand-finished by the design team. Every piece of timber was meticulously cut and smoothed by hand, reflecting the care and dedication poured into this project.
The structure encourages physical activity, imaginative play, and collaborative exploration, making it a focal point of the playground where children can climb, balance, and create their own adventures.
Features of this Playground

- Tree House – magical hideaway
- Pavilion – outdoor classroom space
- World Garden – interactive planting area
- Rubber Tiles with Grass – safe, all-year surface
- Evergreen Planting – year-round greenery
- Palm Trees – adventurous feel

In addition to the timber structure, the playground incorporates ample seating areas for both children and staff. These spaces provide opportunities for rest, social interaction, and outdoor learning.
One of the most anticipated features is the pavilion, which opens up the possibility for lessons to take place outside, merging the school curriculum with the natural surroundings. This thoughtful integration of functional and recreational spaces ensures that the playground is not only a place for play but also a dynamic extension of the classroom.
The playground is located in a semi-woodland area of the school, and careful consideration was given to both aesthetics and functionality.
To ensure all-year usability, the entire ground surface has been laid with compliant rubber tiles, creating a safe and durable base. Grass seed has been sown throughout the tiles, allowing greenery to flourish even in a heavily trafficked area. The result is a soft, natural surface that enhances the sense of connection with the outdoors while remaining practical for daily use.
Quotes From Parents
“My child comes home every day talking about the adventures they’ve had. It’s incredible to see them so excited about being outside!”
“The new playground is magical—every corner feels like a new discovery. Even as a parent, I love exploring it with my kids.”
“Seeing the children engage with the World Garden and the Tree House has been wonderful. This playground has truly brought the school community together.”
Recognizing the inner-city location of the school, increased planting of evergreen species was prioritized to provide year-round greenery.
The planting scheme enhances the sense of woodland enclosure and privacy, creating a calm and inspiring environment for children. Special features, such as palm trees and the enchanting World Garden, add a sense of adventure and global awareness, transforming the playground into a space of wonder and discovery.
School governors were clear in their brief: they wanted an imaginative play area set in a natural green environment. The results have far exceeded expectations. The Business Manager shared, “I am speechless with admiration. This whole area is beyond our wildest dreams. The children want to know if they can have lessons outside in the new Pavilion. The Tree House is magical. The Yellow Brick Road pales into insignificance against your Green Grass Road! The World Garden is stunning. This new area will change the children’s lives forever.”
From the hand-drawn initial design to the final installation, the project demonstrates how thoughtful, natural design can transform a playground into a space that nurtures imagination, learning, and physical development. Grazebrook School now boasts a playground that is not only safe and functional but also a source of inspiration and joy for its students, staff, and local community.
